Today’s HIPAA compliance environment continues to grow in importance as well as complexity. Healthcare providers must closely manage patient protected health information (PHI) or face severe penalties. For those Medicare or Medicaid providers who participate in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program, the ability to demonstrate strict compliance with Meaningful Use standards is critical. Just introduced in March of this year, the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) launched Phase 2 of its HIPAA Audit program. In this program, OCR audits will review the policies and procedures adopted and employed by covered entities and their business associates to meet identified standards and specifications. By the end of 2017, physicians that attested for Meaningful Use will be subject to being audited going back up to six years. With these changes, healthcare providers must re-assess their compliance to HIPAA standards, and evaluate their audit readiness.
