Medical Advantage Named One of 2020 Best Places to Work

by | Aug 12, 2020

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, August 12, 2020, Medical Advantage a healthcare consulting firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Doctors Company (Napa, CA), has been selected by Modern Healthcare as one of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2020. It marks the second straight year that Medical Advantage has earned the honor.

“I think our culture is rooted in a shared passion for helping people and helping each other,” said Medical Advantage President Paul MacLellan, commenting on the honor. “We want our culture to be inclusive, empowering, innovative, and collaborative,” MacLellan explained. “Additionally, we work hard but also respect that our employees have a life outside of work, and support that through our flexible paid time off, holiday, and leave of absence policies.”

The past year for Medical Advantage has seen employee-driven growth, an expansion of offerings, and, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, even greater service flexibility to meet customer needs and preferences in these unpredictable times.

Key initiatives included the employee-driven addition of a private equity consulting channel, leveraging of analytics and data management capabilities to support the State of Michigan’s Department of Health & Human Services with the analysis and reporting for COVID-19 testing data, and helping medical practices with the rapid implementation of telehealth capabilities in response to stay-at-home orders across the nation.

“Our core values were created to empower our people to provide clients with the best possible service, and one of those core values is ‘It’s all about the customer,’” noted Greg Laidlaw, the company’s Vice President of Operations. “The customers’ success is our only success.”

Clients highly value the expertise, commitment, and results provided by Medical Advantage’s employees. “Our Medical Advantage consultant did a truly amazing job pulling out information from our electronic health record (EHR). Now, with our accounts receivable, we can see exactly what we’ve got and bill accordingly,” said the revenue cycle manager at a nine-clinic immunology specialist client in New Jersey. A Flint, Michigan, primary care practice reports that at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, “Our Medical Advantage person got on the phone with us at 7:30 am, and by 8:30 am we were rolling out telehealth to our patients, with 89 percent participation.”

According to the Modern Healthcare website, the “Best Places to Work” recognition program “honors companies that empower employees to provide patients and customers with the best possible care, products, and services. How these organizations have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic is only part of the story; they were also scored on more traditional measures such as benefit design, transparent communication from leadership, and others.”

Chelsea Flohr-Heed, Human Resources Manager at Medical Advantage, said that “we pride ourselves on the level of benefits we offer to our employees—our retirement matching program is in the 99th percentile of organizations of similar size. We offer open paid time off because we understand that employees benefit from a healthy work-life balance, and we offer two different wellness programs, which is something I’ve never seen at an organization before.”

Explaining how the company adapted its employee engagement efforts in the face of the COVID-19 stay-at-home world, Flohr-Heed noted that, “We’ve taken initiatives this year to increase communication and collaboration across all levels of the organization by implementing Microsoft Teams and other MS Office Suite products, holding more frequent staff meetings during the height of the pandemic, and creating more activities that enable employees to socially interact over video calls.”

Concluded MacLellan, “I think all of the healthcare providers or suppliers that have made the list this year have achieved something quite incredible, considering the pandemic and its impact on healthcare.”
